Crowns Q&A

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are common dental restorations.

Crowns

A crown is a cap that your Nassau Dental Spa provider bonds on top of a damaged or severely decaying tooth. The crown restores your tooth. You may also get a crown to place atop a dental implant.

Bridges

A bridge fills the space of a missing tooth. Bridges have an artificial tooth (pontic) and two crowns or a metal framework. The pontic fills the gap in your smile, and the crowns or framework hold your bridge in place.

When are crowns and bridges necessary?

The team at Nassau Dental Spa uses crowns to:

  • Cover teeth after root canal therapy
  • Cover misshapen and severely discolored teeth
  • Hold dental bridges in place
  • Support teeth with large fillings
  • Protect weak or decaying teeth

Your dentist might recommend a bridge if you lose a single permanent tooth to extraction or oral trauma.

What does getting crowns and bridges involve?

At Nassau Dental Spa, it takes at least two visits to get a crown or a bridge.

Crowns

If you’re getting a crown, your dentist completes an oral exam and takes a series of X-rays to assess the extent of the damage to the tooth or the decay they must remove. They then numb your mouth with an anesthetic and take an impression of your tooth.

Your dentist sends the impression to a lab that designs and manufactures a custom crown. When your crown is ready, you return to Nassau Dental Spa.

Bridges

If you’re getting a bridge, your dentist completes an oral exam, takes X-rays, and removes a thin layer of enamel from the abutment teeth on either side of the gap. Then, they take an impression and send it to a dental lab.

The lab designs and manufactures a custom dental bridge that fits perfectly. When it’s ready, you return to Nassau Dental Spa.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

Crowns and bridges last 10-12 years on average, but it’s possible to extend their use through good oral hygiene. The Nassau Dental Spa team recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting the office every six months for preventive teeth cleaning and an oral exam.
