ENDODONTIST DENTAL SERVICES IN FRANKLIN SQUARE, NY

WHAT IS AN ENDODONTIST?

Endodontists are dentists who specialize in maintaining teeth through endodontic therapy — procedures, involving the soft inner tissue of the teeth, called the pulp. The word “endodontic” originates from “endo” meaning inside and “odont” meaning tooth. All dentists are trained in diagnosis and endodontic therapy, however, some of the teeth can prove to be especially difficult to diagnose and treat. For that reason, you may bereferred to an endodontic specialist.

In addition to dental school, endodontists receive two or more years of advanced education in this kind of treatment. Endodontists study root canal techniques and procedures in greater depth, for diagnosis and treatment of more difficult cases.

ROOT CANAL AND ENDODONTIC RETREATMENT

Root canal and endodontic treatment in Franklin Square, New York

For this procedure, a  local anesthetic will be administered.  A sheet of latex called the “rubber dam”  will be placed around the tooth to isolate it,  keeping it clean and dry during treatment.  The treatment consists of a few basic steps, but the number of visits will depend on your particular case.  Some treatments take 2 visits but many are just a single visit.  Occasionally 3 appointments are needed depending on the degree of infection/inflammation and degree of treatment difficulty.  Let’s look at the basic steps for nonsurgical endodontic therapy.  Root canal or endodontic therapy has a very high degree of success, up to 90%.  Teeth which can be treated carry a success rate up to ninety percent. You will be informed of chances of success prior to any endodontic procedure to that you can make an informed decision. Patients across Franklin Square and Long Island, New York who require root canal or endodontic treatment should start by giving our office a call at (516) 233-1227 and making your appointment with Dr. Nina Babayev.

Endodontic retreatment in Franklin Square,  New York

Occasionally a tooth that has undergone endodontic treatment fails to heal or pain continues despite therapy. Although rare, sometimes a tooth initially responds to root canal therapy but becomes painful or diseased months or years later. When either of these situations, the tooth often can be maintained with a second endodontic treatment.Improper healing may be caused by:

  • Curved or narrow canals which were not treated during the initial treatment.
  • Complicated canals which were undetected during the initial treatment.
  • The crown or restoration was not placed within the proper amount of time following the procedure.
  • New decay (aka recurrent caries) or leakage around a crown or restoration that allowed for recontamination of the root canal system.

Once retreatment has been selected as a solution, your tooth must be reopened to gain access to the root canal filling material. This restorative material will be removed to enable access to the root canal. The doctors will now remove the previous root canal filling material, clean your canals, and carefully examine the inside of the tooth. Once cleaned and thoroughly disinfected, an antibacterial paste will typically be placed within the tooth for 1-2 weeks under a temporary filling. When you return your endodontist will replace the antibacterial paste with a root canal filling material and again place a temporary filling in the tooth.
